Roelof Bekendam, is a MD student with honors at the University of Groningen and a research assistant at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Roelof is assisting in research on a potential treatment for preventing blood clots, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in women. His supervisor wrote “Roelof is a motivated, enthusiastic and talented student…this award allows him to pursue his educational and career goals [in academic medicine].”
